The Supreme Personality
Lord Krishna
कृष्ण
The charioteer of Arjuna, the teacher of the Bhagavad Gita, the one whose flute steals every heart that hears it
Lord Krishna is the avatar I think about constantly. With his flute in his hand and the peacock feather in his crown, he is the one who captures the heart of every devotee who turns to him. He is the teacher who spoke the Gita on the battlefield, the child who stole butter in Vrindavan, the friend who never abandons those who call out to him. Everything I write about him is just an attempt to come a little closer to him.
Divine Teachings
Wisdom from the Bhagavad Gita
Four of the central lessons Lord Krishna gave to Arjuna, in his own words.
Karma Yoga
Karma Yoga is the path of action without attachment. Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that we must do our duty in this world, but we cannot cling to what comes from it. The work itself is the offering. The result belongs to the Lord. When you act from this place, every action becomes service, and every outcome becomes acceptable.
“You have the right to perform your duty, but never to its fruits.”Bhagavad Gita 2.47
Bhakti Yoga
Bhakti is the simplest path and also the most powerful. Lord Krishna says the smallest thing offered with love reaches him more than the grandest ritual offered without it. A leaf, a flower, a fruit, water, anything given with a sincere heart, he receives. He does not ask for perfection. He asks for love.
“Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me.”Bhagavad Gita 18.66
The Eternal Soul
The soul is not the body. Lord Krishna spends much of the second chapter of the Gita teaching Arjuna this one truth. The body changes from childhood to old age, but the one watching the body never changes. The soul is never born, it never dies. It is the same eternal witness in every form it has ever worn. When you understand this, the fear of death loosens its grip.
“The soul is never born nor dies.”Bhagavad Gita 2.20
Divine Love
Lord Krishna's love is unconditional. He is the father of this universe, the mother, the support, the goal. There is no devotee he turns away. Even the gopis of Vrindavan, ordinary cowherd girls who could offer him nothing but their devotion, became his closest companions. That is the kind of love he is. He meets you exactly where you are.
“I am the father of this universe, the mother, the support.”Bhagavad Gita 9.17
Divine Pastimes
The Lilas of Lord Krishna
Moments from his life. Each one a doorway. The Leelas section is where these are told in full.
Birth in Mathura
Born inside Kamsa's prison cell at midnight, on the darkest possible night, so the world could see that the Lord is willing to start where his devotees start.
Childhood in Vrindavan
The years he spent as a cowherd boy among the gopis, the cows, and the fields of Vrindavan. Pure leela, every day a new pastime.
Lifting Govardhan Hill
When Lord Indra sent a storm to drown the village, Lord Krishna lifted the entire hill of Govardhan on one finger and held it as a shelter for seven days.
Rasa Lila
The divine dance on a moonlit night in Vrindavan. The soul's love for God told as a dance that the gopis never wanted to end.
Friendship with Arjuna
The teacher who became a charioteer. The friend who held Arjuna's reins on the battlefield and held his understanding too.
The Bhagavad Gita
Eighteen chapters of divine wisdom spoken at Kurukshetra when Arjuna needed it most. The conversation that still guides the world.
Sacred Stories
Tales from his life on earth
Stealing Butter
As a small child in Vrindavan, Lord Krishna would sneak into the homes of the gopis and steal their butter. He would untie the pots hanging from the ceiling and eat from them with his cowherd friends, and when the mothers caught him he would smile and they would forget to be angry. The story is not about butter. It is about how he steals hearts. The gopis loved him so much that even being robbed by him was their joy. He does not come to those who prove themselves to him. He comes to those who love him.
Defeating Kaliya
The serpent Kaliya had poisoned the Yamuna with his venom, and the cows and the cowherd boys could no longer drink the water. Lord Krishna jumped into the river and danced on Kaliya's hoods until the snake surrendered. But he did not kill him. He let Kaliya go. The lesson sits there quietly. Even the most poisonous nature can be transformed when it bows to the Lord. Surrender is not death. Surrender is the beginning of mercy.
The Vishwarupa
Mid-Gita, on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Lord Krishna showed Arjuna his cosmic universal form. Suns inside suns. Infinite faces. Universes pouring from his mouth. Arjuna saw, and Arjuna trembled. The whole story has been written as its own leela, Krishna's Vishwarupa, if you want to walk through it slowly.
Draupadi's Sari
When Draupadi was being dragged into the Kaurava court and her sari was being pulled from her body, she let go of every worldly hope. She let go of her husbands, her family, her own strength. She called out only to Lord Krishna. And he answered. The sari became endless. The hand that pulled on it kept pulling and the cloth never finished. This is what surrender to the Lord looks like. The moment you let go of everything else, his protection becomes infinite.

Holi
The festival of colors. Lord Krishna's playfulness with the gopis of Vrindavan turned into a celebration that the whole subcontinent now keeps every spring.
Gita Jayanti
The day Lord Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. Eighteen chapters of divine wisdom entered the world on this day.
Lord Krishna is the teacher, the friend, the cowherd, the charioteer, and the Supreme Personality of Godhead all at once. He steals butter and he speaks the Gita with the same heart. He is the one who chose a prison cell as his birthplace so that no devotee would ever feel he could not reach them. He is the one who promises that he comes back, again and again, whenever dharma is in decline.
If you want to walk through specific moments of his life as stories, the Leelas section has them. If you want to talk to him about anything at all, Diya is here.
