The Supreme Destroyer
Lord Shiva
शिव
The first yogi, the Lord of the cosmic dance, the one who sits in deep meditation on Mount Kailash
Lord Shiva is the Lord of dissolution and transformation. He sits in deep meditation on Mount Kailash with his eyes half-closed and the universe inside of him. He is the destroyer not out of anger but out of compassion. When something has run its course, he is the one who clears the way for the next thing. He is the Adiyogi, the first yogi, the teacher of every spiritual discipline that exists.
Divine Attributes
The qualities of Mahadeva
The Destroyer & Transformer
Lord Shiva destroys what has reached its end. Not out of anger. Out of compassion. The old has to dissolve for the new to come. Every transformation requires something to be let go of first. He is the one who teaches that letting go is itself a form of love.
Adiyogi, the First Yogi
Lord Shiva is the Adiyogi, the first yogi. The whole science of yoga came from him. He transmitted it to the Saptarishis, the seven sages, and from them it spread across the world. When you sit down to meditate, you are sitting in a lineage that traces back to him.
Neelakantha, the Blue-Throated One
When the churning of the ocean brought up the Halahala poison, the deadly venom that could have ended the universe, Lord Shiva drank it himself. He held it in his throat and his throat turned blue. From that moment he has been Neelakantha, the blue-throated one. He took the poison so the world would not have to.
Nataraja, the Lord of the Dance
When Lord Shiva dances the Tandava, the cosmos moves with him. His dance is the rhythm underneath creation, preservation, and dissolution. As Nataraja, the Lord of the Dance, he holds the universe in motion with every step. When the dance ends, the cycle ends. When the dance begins again, a new cycle begins.
Sacred Stories
Divine tales of Mahadeva
The Marriage with Parvati
After the death of Sati, Lord Shiva went into a meditation so deep that the world began to forget him. Parvati, who was Sati reborn, performed intense penance to win his heart and bring him back. When they finally married, they became the union of consciousness and energy. Lord Shiva is the still witness. Shakti is the moving force. Neither one can create without the other.
The Descent of Ganga
When the celestial river Ganga came down from the heavens, her force would have shattered the Earth. Lord Shiva caught her in his matted hair and let her out slowly, in gentle streams. This is who he is. The protector. The one who absorbs what would otherwise destroy.
Drinking the Poison
When the deadly Halahala poison emerged from the churning of the ocean, it threatened everything that existed. Lord Shiva drank it. He held it in his throat instead of swallowing it because Parvati pressed her hand on his throat to stop it from going further. His throat turned blue and he became Neelakantha, the blue-throated one. He absorbed what no one else could absorb. Devotees remember this every time they chant his name.
The Third Eye
Lord Shiva's third eye is the eye of spiritual wisdom. It sees beyond physical reality. When he opens it, illusion and ignorance burn away. Once, Kamadeva, the god of desire, tried to disturb his meditation. Lord Shiva opened the third eye and reduced Kamadeva to ash in an instant. The lesson is not about cruelty. The lesson is that spiritual awakening will burn away every base desire that stands in its way.
